Eye and Hip Issues Found in Pembrokes
Some breeders OFA their dogs for Hips and Elbows. Some also get a CERF certification for eyes. As of right now I do not do this but I might in the future. I feel comfortable getting my vets opinion on my dogs hips versus sending them in to OFA. There is not actually a high incidence of Hip or eye problems in this particular breed. Hip screenings are subjective and can be affected by placement of the dog. OFA excellent dogs can and have created dogs with hip displasia. There is now evidence linking early spay/neuter with hip abnormalities. Eye certification needs renewed continuously which only means that you can't 100% guarantee they won't pass on eye issues if the eye issues don't present themselves until after you have bred a couple litters.
If a breeder finds that they have produced dogs with Hip, Elbow, or Eye issues, they should take this seriously and reconsider their breeding program.
