Exercise Induced Collapse

Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC) is a condition which causes weakness following hard work or play. This is not often found in Pembrokes but it is something to be aware of, especially when looking for a working dog. This is a recessive condition that can be inherited. Signs of the diseases usually show up between 5 months and 3 years of age so you might not know right away that your puppy has this condition.

According to PawPrint Genetics
“ Though the exact frequency in the overall Pembroke Welsh Corgi population is unknown, 14% out of 94 Pembroke Welsh Corgis tested were carriers of the mutation and 2% were at-risk/affected.”

This study backs that up:

Unfortunately, there is a very small test sample available so if more corgis were actually tested there is a good possibility that the numbers would change.

There are other collapse conditions too that are not related to EIC. Fortunately these don't seem to be found in Pembrokes.

If you have a dog that is affected with EIC they can still live a long and happy life as long as lifestyle changes are applied for them.
